Ninja is well trained and he always gets the short straw because of it.
When we go hike, as we did yesterday in the Black Forest, and have other dogs with us Ninja always has a tough time. Ninja gets asked to do something and gets a goodie for it. It takes 5 times the rewards to get something right for the other dog. Don`t get me wrong, Hadez is a great dog, but when he wants something, he does it. It can be annoying, and even if you are just a tiny bit upset Ninja notices it and as sensitive as he it is him who did something wrong and feels guilty for no reason.
At the beginning of the year, we met a person whose dog attacked Ninja, because “I focused on Ninja and not the other dog!?!?” The dog was everything but used to frustrations and not coming to rest. I tried to minimize the stress for the dog by putting all the weight on Ninja shoulders. Ninja knows how to deal with frustration, how to come to rest, even if I severely restrict his freedom to go where he pleases. Don`t get me wrong, I am not blaming the other dog, I just knew that Ninja could handle this better. After a short time, they no longer had issues with each other and were running around together and that was what I hoped to happen.
This builds frustration in Ninja. Of course, he sees that others get to do stuff he is not allowed to, that they get more treats, more attention. So, I find it extremely important to make up for this, by doing something only for Ninja now and then.
To let go of these restrictions I take Ninja on a hike. I try not to speak a word so he can focus on what he likes doing, let him roam free (where possible), and he decides where we go. Attention, affection and delicious treats are also part of the deal.
I will add some pictures of the hike to our stories so you can see how he felt.
How does Your dog handle frustrations? Which picture do you like best? For improving my creative process, I welcome criticism and suggestions for the video part. Thank You.
